may market day
The Guild held its fourth annual May Market Day on Monday May 11. The day is a very successful event for the Guild, with the opportunity for all member groups to get together under one roof to discuss and taste food, of course!
vegetables.co.nz and potatoes.co.nz. have been with us from the beginning, and their long table literally groaning with the best of New Zealand vegetables and potatoes was quite a sight. Their competition on the night was to “guess the weight” of a very large pumpkin. The actual weight was 33.4kg and it was correctly guessed by Di Swan, Essentially about Food. We presented Pip Duncan (vegetables.co.nz) with flowers to thank her for all her support and for her time in gathering the material for the revised NZGFW Handbook (due out later this year).
Thank you to Barker’s of Geraldine, who are also in the four-year club, and to MG Marketing for their third year. This time we included The Artisans Corner, and were thrilled to have many Cuisine Artisan Award winners and finalists showcasing their delicious products.
Next year will be our fifth Market Day birthday. The Jubilee Hall in Parnell, Auckland, is already booked for May 1 (May Day), so mark that date in your diaries. It will be bigger than ever. Hubbards were so excited by the market this year that they have already asked to reserve a stand.
I spotted many a food writer with a sausage roll in their mouth, thanks to I Love Pies. This just confirms we all love a sausage roll. And Nici Wickes posted this on her Facebook page the following morning: “Fantastic market day, thank you! I’m inspired by the fabulous produce and products and that irresistible coconut and chocolate milk from Little Island. It’s a breakfast drink, right?” Bring on next year!
